Bogotá

A vibrant city with an interesting mix of history and modernity

In the Andes, at an altitude of 2600 meters, lies the capital of Colombia, Bogotá, with an estimated 9 million inhabitants. With residents from all over the world and a thriving cultural scene, Bogotá is a city with a lot to offer. The metropolis has several museums, such as the Gold Museum, the National Museum and the Botero Museum, where you can immerse yourself in Colombian history and culture.

In addition, Bogotá is known for its graffiti street art. Amazing murals, often depicting a political or historical message, can be found all over the city. Bogotá is also a popular city among cycling enthusiasts: no other major city in Latin America has more cycle paths and cycling is therefore very popular.

Most visitors to the city go to the La Candelaria district, the beautiful colonial center of Bogotá where it is pleasant to stroll through the sloping streets with their colorful colonial houses. To the north there are more chic, modern neighborhoods, with world-class bars, cafes and restaurants.

Tatacoa Desert

Discover the Colombian “desert” and a sky full of stars

El Desierto de la Tatacoa or the Tatacoa desert is known for its special rocky formations in red and gray tones and for the many cacti you find there. The landscape is mysterious and it is one of the hottest places in Colombia: the temperature can rise to around 40 degrees during the day.

By the way, the name Tatacoa desert is not entirely correct because it rains more than in a desert. But desert or not, the landscape is beautiful and ideally suited for a nice walk. It is best to make this at the end of the afternoon when the sun is setting. It is then no longer as strong and the colors of the formations are at their best.

Be sure to also spend a night in Tatacoa to enjoy the unique starry sky.

San Agustín

Discover Colombia’s intriguing pre-Columbian history in San Agustín (ampliar texto para que se acomode al alto)

The Archaeological Park of San Agustín represents one of the mysteries of Colombia’s pre-Columbian cultures. It is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, highlighting its global importance and the need for its preservation. The stone works of art in the park give a good impression of the oldest civilizations in America, especially of the burial rituals of the residents of those days. These impressive sculptures, some of which reach up to seven meters in height, depict human figures, animals, and mythical beings, reflecting the beliefs and cosmology of the ancient inhabitants. The park covers a vast area with several archaeological sites, including ceremonial fountains and tombs. Researchers believe that the site was a major religious and cultural center between the 1st and 8th centuries AD. Despite numerous studies, many aspects of the San Agustín culture remain unexplained, adding to its aura of mystery. Visitors can walk along scenic trails surrounded by lush vegetation, discovering monuments that have stood for centuries. The park not only offers a glimpse into the past but also inspires curiosity about the origins and traditions of Colombia’s ancient peoples.
